contemplate

In Mass Effect, Commander Shepard alters the course of events with behavior that either stimulates characters' moral mycelium or intimidates them. The wayward Spectre becomes more able to speak in these styles as she gains experience in each. Steeped in such spirit, she can express syntheses such that spare characters from humanistic anguish. This results in more flexible opportunities to love and more effective decision-making and teamwork. Because of the competency of operatives and her dedication to critical missions, Shepard's leadership tactics increase their morale.

What is particularly interesting is that regardless of whether Shepard specializes in Paragon or Renegade charisma, she can explain things to receptive lovers that make them trust her and open up. This is perhaps because her genetic hormone ratio1 is such that they associate her pheromone output2 with compatibility. At least, one can see that Jack is in the crew just because despite deployment on suicide missions Shepard makes her feel safe.

Jack is a genetic super-biotic that the human survivalist network Cerebrus selected as a child to confine for experiments to ensure that she was the ultimate biotic soldier. Due to the lack of progress made by the Subject 0 facility due to their disregard to the dedication of resources to reasonable hypotheses, the facility went rogue but was not cleaned up as Cerebrus does not understand ethical responsibility.

The Alliance never found the secretive Cerebrus facility; and Jack escaped among riots, commandeering a shuttle off planet. She spent years surviving, ambitiously, until she was once again imprisoned. Shephard sprung her under direction toward a mission, but she is not under duress to remain on crew. And there's definitely more than sex to the videos of their romance posted on YouTube.
